New for 2013

Greetings Future Summer Camper and Parents!

We want to let everyone know that we are making some changes to the way we've been sharing information from camp to all those back home while we are there. This year we are retiring this blog and the Spanish one and going with a new facebook page instead. We hope that this will allow us to provide photos, videos, and information from camp a lot faster and better and a lot more of it!

To "like" our new facebook page and follow the action during the week of July 15-19, simply search for "At High Point Camp" or go to our main KidsTown facebook page and click on the image in our "Likes" section.

Some things will remain the same. We will still probably be sharing videos through vimeo and posting pictures to our snapfish account as well, but were just going to see how this goes and see what we learn!

Pastor Josh

What HPC is All About

Guest Speaker and beloved Teacher Mr Ed Dunlop with his traveling buddy Andy talking with the children about what camp is all about and what knowing Jesus is all about. Its why Pastor Josh, Pearl, and Nathaly do what they do. We hope that for each of your children that they not only bring home fond memories of zip line rides, high flying blobs, and giant jawbreakers but that they bring home a life that has been changed for the better because of what they've learned this week about Jesus.

It has been a pleasure serving your children this week,
Pastor Josh, Pearl, and Nathaly

Fish 'N Eels

"AAAH! IT'S SO SLIPPERY!" screams practically every camper that's tried to catch one of the three eels swimming around in the pool. No, parents, these eels aren't pets that are always in the pool; these slippery fish are part of a tradition of pool games at camp. A bucketful of goldfish (each worth 250 points) and a few eels (worth 500 points) are dumped into the pool, and the team that catches and deposits the most fish in their team bucket are the winners. This year, Sylvia Park splashed her way through the throngs of screaming girls and caught an eel for the Raiders, ultimately helping them win the competition. Way to take one for the team Sylvia!

High Point Olympics

Junior Olympic swimmer Jewel Coulter demonstrates
the perfect cannonball form

One of the things I've noticed here at High Point Camp is that many campers seem to find their life's calling during free time activities. In this case, Jewel, Jenna, Stephanie, and Brooke all seem to have aspirations to become Olympic athletes. These tiny, but confident swimmers hosted a series of competitions at the pool that showed off their dexterity in the water and astounded this reporter. Who knows, maybe this tape of their early days will go viral once they make it to the real thing!

Totally Tubular Tubing #2

Angel English's tubing adventure caught on camera!

Totally Tubuler Tubing #1

Except for the quiet hum of the boat's engine, all is calm and quiet on the lake surface. Suddenly, the engines rev up, ropes snap as the lines go taut, and startled shouts pierce the air as the campers on the tubes get yanked around the lake at astounding speeds! Sion, Sylvia, Mika, and Lillie hang on for dear life as they fly across the water's surface, at the mercy of the choppy waves and a gleeful boat driver who's all too happy to flip a tube or two. Will they be able to hold on for the entire ride, or will they be tossed into the water like a piece of flotsam?

Speed Racers

ZOOM! And off they go. Sara Park and Lillie Orlando race off into the distance, competing to see who is the lightest of foot and champion of the short distance dash. Will Sara's long legs propel her to victory, or will Lillie's nimble form win the race? Both girls line up at the starting line and tear it up across the grass (sorry mister gardener!) and the victor is......Well, you guys know we don't like to spoil a good ending. Watch the video below and find out for yourselves!

Ricochet

Another one of the many very creative games that can be found around the grounds of High Point Camp. During Thursday's free activity time, many of the boys could be found either in the dodgeball cage, the Gaga ring, or the Ricochet box. Here one can watch as Alberto Sandoval and Kiyoshi Shiraishi kick it out with two other competitors in this fun and unique game.

You Are What You Eat

You know my Momma used to use the statement, "You are what you eat" when I was a boy to try to get me to eat my greens. She said I'd grow big and strong if I did so. This leaves me to wonder what you become when you eat things other than greens...I *think* Pastor Steve has preached on that a couple time ;) *wink wink

Local media caught up with a couple girls, Jasmine, Chryne, Katelyn, and Bailey to ask them if they understood the concept my Momma taught me. Local media believes that they do, but they simply don't care about the end result when candy is involved. In fact, they actually seem to prefer such an outcome. The one known as "Chryne" appeared to be the calming influence in the group and the "small"-est one in the group appeared to have become a real, well, you can watch the video!

Several other reports are coming in on "wild child" behavior. Could we be ushering in a new 60's era? Local media believes there is still hope for this generation! In one of her moments of reasonable sanity, we later found this once wild child calmly enjoying a giant pretzel with mustard.

(rumor does have it that this child did not want such a picture released to the public. such rogue images apparently hurt her desired image?)

Peanut Free Slush Puppies!

Local media has recently uncovered concrete proof (not the ground but what was on it) that our very own Andrew Friedly is behaving as his Momma taught him and only enjoying what is in the “No Peanut Zone.” No swollen faces, no epi-pens, or er visits on this trip! Only another trip to the snack shop for another peanut-free slurpie and then its back to Gaga!

(oh, and finding out that the giant jawbreakers were also peanut free? Priceless.)

Gaga!!

With a game that sounds tribal and played by sweaty boys and college young men, this game is a man's way of dealing with the sugar rush. Local media has already learned that girls just bounce up and down and scream their heads off. Local media just thinks they need a good sport like Gaga!
The object is to slap a playground ball towards another player and get it to touch their body. You can score them out by either a direct hit or a bounce off the wall.
Often in the arena were Zayin Bruk and Andrew Friedly. Zayin became a pretty worthy competitor often staying in until the very end.

Good ol' Ranger

Every camp has at least a couple pets and every camp I've ever been at has at least one camp dog. Now these aren't just any ordinary dogs. Camp dogs are special. They have to be. They gotta love lots and lots of petting, hugging, and table scrap feeding kids. They can't bite or bark, only slobber and give you the sad eyes for table scraps. They can only happily run all over camp with their tongue hanging out of their mouth. And for this old veteran camp dog, named Ranger, they also gotta love the zip line. Deep down inside we all know that Ranger wants to be free like a bird...

Sugar Allergies

I think some of your children are allergic to sugar. For instance, Janelle Chanchu had a bunch of the stuff during free time, and her reaction to it was absolutely bizarre! The poor girl was jumping up and down, yelling something about evil pandas, and scaring the pants off of this reporter. Who would have ever thiought her to be such a wild child? This allergic reaction is also apparently highly contagious, as the rest of Janelle's cabin mates were screaming their heads off and bouncing off the walls right alongside her, You might want to get your kids checked out folks. This could be dangerous.

Scaling Mt. Everest

Brooke McDermott, Rebecca Musgrove, and Masako Orlando may just be the youngest climbers to reach the peak of Mt. Everest in the history of mankind! Okay, so maybe it was actually the Summit at the lake instead of Mt. Everest in the Himalayas, but close enough, right? These ladies bravely scaled the heights of the intimidating Summit at the HPC lake and even made it back in time for some slip 'n slide action before the end of cabin activity time. Slip 'n slide, you ask? I know this is sounding less and less like it has anything to do with climbing a mountain, but bear with me folks. Once you watch the video, you'll see why I'm so impressed.

2012 Camp Theme

Maybe you've been wondering what all the piratey talk is all about that you've been reading in some of the blog posts. Well, this year's camp theme has been a Pirate theme with the two competing teams being the Raiders vs. the Buccaneers. Every camper finds themselves on one side or the other. Regardless though of which side you find yourself on, everyone is united together under the the singular purpose of knowing and growing in Jesus Christ. This year's theme verse has been Matthew 6:21 which says, "For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also." The campers have all been challenged this week by camp speaker, Ed Dunlop to think strongly about their treasure. Parents, have you thought strongly about what you consider your treasure and where and how you are storing it up? Your camper child(ren) will be glad to help make sure you're being a proper pirate with your personal treasures with what they've learned this week!
