The Great Arrival

What a day. What a full, busy, crazy, and yet ultimately rewarding 24 hours it has been. Before I dive into the details, I'll let you parents know that WE MADE IT! Which is no mean feat, considering the number of kids at camp this year. But all sixty of our CBC kids arrived safely and are at this moment immersing themselves into the wholesome environment of High Point Camp.

After the hectic checking in, signing up, and bag tagging of the morning, the buses finally pulled out of the parking lot at around 10:00 AM, and arrived at the camp around 4:30 PM. Why so long, you may ask. Well, I could just say traffic and leave it at that; or, I could tell you about horses and buggies, lunch with sixty kids at McDonalds, and Yogi Bear (not necessarily in that order).

Hey Mom and Dad (and Fluffy)!

Recounting the traffic part is easy. I'm sure everyone in the D.C. area knows about the nightmare of rush hour traffic on Monday mornings firsthand, of which we were caught up in for a while. We were rolling along by noon, and once lunchtime hit, we marched into McDonalds with orders in hand. After a good deal of confusion, order botch ups, and about a hundred bathroom trips, most of us were able to stretch out our legs, play with our Happy Meal light sabers, and enjoy our lunches (I've discovered that when you are running after sixty kids for over four hours, you don't get a lot of time to relax).

After an hour and a half or so, we herded everyone back onto the bus, and I thought we could just watch a nice relaxing movie until we got to the Camp . But then started the choruses of "are we there yet?" Having that same question repeated to you dozens of times, coupled with the sounds of Yogi Bear and Booboo running around on the T.V. screen stealing picnic baskets, for over an hour would be enough to drive anyone a little crazy.

But as maddening as the trip up was at times, the cheerful, zany, and creative personalities of our kids continues to make me smile and thank the Lord for giving me this opportunity to work with what just may be the best group of kids in the whole state.

Horse and buggy team carrying....gas?

Anyways, after trailing behind a horse and buggy for a little while (it is Amish country!), the High Point Camp welcome sign rose into view at around 4:3o, amid ear splitting shouts of joy from both buses. Once the luggage was unpacked and delivered, makeshift tent seats taken down, cabin groups successfully established, and dinner set up and eaten up to the last crumb, the kids were allowed free time to go kayaking, blobbing, or swimming until the opening service. With such a promising beginning, it is in full confidence that we set out for another great week at High Point. Keep us in your prayers and we will keep you informed with more blog posts and videos as the activities progress!
